YO:Durham's Summer Career Academy is a 6 week, paid program focusing on developing realistic career plans and learning the behaviors and values needed to realize these plans. Additionally, the Academy includes career related speakers, motivational speakers, and field trips.
Students are matched with an individual mentor from the community, but are also supported with a mentor team. Volunteers commit for at least one year, serving 2-4 hours per week. Our mentors must complete a criminal background check and are trained to:

Students receive on-the-job training and coaching through 4-10 hour per week paid internship positions that last from September to May. Students are placed according to their interests and the availability of positions. In 2011-2012 we are offering internships in everything from information technology, to journalism, medical research, and social services. A small number of the businesses offering internships this year have done so continuously since the launch of YO:Durham in 2007, while many others are just joining us this fall. If you are interested in offering an internship opportunity to a YO:Durham student at your business or workplace, please email Eric Olson-Getty at intern@yodurham.org.
The YO:Durham students participate in many service learning opportunities during their year of opportunity. These community projects have included volunteering for Kids Voting, working in soup kitchens, fundraising for Youth United Habitat for Humanity, and participating in Durham CAN action teams. Several graduates have been invited to serve on the Durham City Youth Council. These opportunities expose our students to their local community and encourage them to get involved.
