All students are matched with community mentor teams. These teams are each made up of 4 students and 4 mentors. Our mentors are trained to:

Internships

Students work in paid internship positions 6-10 hours per week from October to June. Students are placed according to their interests and the availability of positions. In 2007 we were able to offer internships in everything from health insurance, construction management, childcare, statistics, lobbying, customer service, to office management. Many of the businesses providing internships in 2007 have continued to do so in 2008, although a few have backed-out due to the recent economic crisis.  Students receive on-the-job training and coaching from their employers.

Service Learning

The YO: Durham students participate in many service learning opportunities during their year of opportunity.  These community projects include volunteering for Kids Voting, working in soup kitchens, fundraising for Youth United Habitat for Humanity, and participating in Durham CAN's Youth Action Training and "Help Increase the Peace" workshops. Several graduates have been invited to serve on the Durham City Youth Council. These opportunities expose our students to their local community and encourage them to get involved.
